3 Act Template

Found this great template on Growing Exponentially. You can also grab it below:

Here is another link to the pdf (in case any of the above links expire).

3 Act Search Engine

Here is a fun tool developed by Robert Kaplinksy that searches great blogs and sites for lesson ideas:

Also make sure to browse the sites he has chosen. The work happening there is top notch.

Session Summary April 2014

We covered the fast hands three act  and shared ideas and resources around time distance graphs.

We started with Dan Meyer's graphing stories and then talked about Desmos application function carnival.

We also talked about how to use Logger Pro with the Vernier Motion Detector. This also led to a discussion of the physic's lesson on Flappy bird.

We also shared my favorite new app reflector, which turns your phone or tablet into a portable document camera (and more).

We also shared some other resources, including Smart Test Prep and a fun scale factor lesson from Math lab called Blow'em up cartoons

Fast Clapping 3 Act

Fawn Nguyen posted this:

Mr. Kraft saw an opportunity for a three act: https://mrkraft.wikispaces.com/Fast+Clapper

I reworked the video as an introduction to linear regression for the 8th and 9th grade CCSS.

You can download it here.

First Session Tuesday February 25, 2014

We had our first session today (rescheduled from our last snow storm) and we discussed the basic structure of the three act lesson and went through a 3 Act Demo from Dan Meyer called "playing catch up," which I like to call "Me and Julio."

Here is the entire presentation.

You can also download the three act from Dan Meyer's site

Here are the 4 suggested readings and activities to prepare for the next session:

1. Read this Intro to 3 Act Lessons

2. Read the Focus on Act 1 and make sure to review the video (see below):

3. Read Geoff Krall's entry on getting started with 3 Acts.

4. Teach a 3 Act in your class and share your experience with the group. What worked well? What are you wondering? If you don't have a chance to teach a 3 Act, share one that you are interested in teaching or have taught and get feedback from the group.

Here are a few suggested resources for finding a great 3 Act lesson:

Dan Meyer's Spreadsheet

Geoff Krall's CCSS maps

101 Questions

Andrew Stadel's Spreadsheet

If you have any other great 3 Act resources please email me.

If you are able to share your work on a 3 Act lesson in our next session, we would love to post supporting media that you found or that you created. Send me an email a few nights before with the links, visuals and documents you have and I can incorporate them into the session.
